Find The Perfect Makana!

Gift-giving is a common custom in Hawaii, particularly when visiting a friend's home or returning from a trip. Our Japanese guests refer to these kinds of gifts as "omiyage" and this term is also known and used in the islands. Here are some gift ideas from Kauai that you can easily find while visiting Hanalei Colony Resort.

Local Food. In Hawaii, we love good food ("ono grinds," as we call it). Consider taking home some of Kauai's tasty locally-made food products. A few of our favorites? Kauai Kookies, a staple of the local diet for nearly 50 years! Kauai Nut Roasters, absolutely addictive and available nearby in Hanalei Town. Anahola Granola, wonderful granola, trail mix, and special "MacaMania" bars. There are also some great Kauai-made honeys, butters, and jams (like Aunty Lilikoi's).

Local Beverages. Of course, the Big Island of Hawaii is known for its Kona Coffee, but did you know Kauai has its own exotic coffee? Kauai Coffee's farm on the island's south shore is the largest coffee farm in the United States! You'll find their delicious coffees readily available all over the island. Buying a gift for a tea drinker? Look for the specialty teas from The Hanalei Tea Company. The tea comes in a hand-crafted wooden box in such flavors as Mango Sunrise, Pineapple Paradise, and Rainbow Medley. A tropical taste of the islands. And then there is Koloa Rum, an award-winning premium rum made right here on Kauai.

Other Kauai Gift Ideas. Island Soap & Candle Works makes tropically-scented soy and paraffin candles, skin care products, and handmade soaps. Be sure to check out their Surfer's Salve – not just for surfers, it's great for soothing all kinds of skin flareups! Hint: Some of their products are sold right here on-site at Hanalei Day Spa. Na Pali Art Gallery & Coffee Shop, located at Hanalei Colony, is also a great place to seek out truly unique and one-of-a-kind local gifts, jewelry, and art. And for golfers back home, a logo golf cap, towel or balls from one of Kauai's famous courses is the ideal gift.

Local Arts and Crafts. Farmer's markets are a great place to discover and sample many of Kauai's local food items, as well as browse locally-made jewelry, art, and clothing. Hand-painted sarongs and pareos are always a classic gift for friends back home. Delicate shell jewelry and beautiful hand-carved woodcraft are island treasures. Explore Kauai's farmer's markets and craft fairs. We recommend Hanalei Farmers Market every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., just a short drive from Hanalei Colony.

Lei. The ultimate gift of aloha is a lei and if you really want to wow a special someone back home, presenting a fresh flower lei (with the traditional kiss on the cheek, of course) is a truly unforgettable gift. Local florists can provide you with a lei that will pass the airport agricultural inspection (you don't want your beautiful lei confiscated before you board your flight!), pack it properly for transit, and provide you with tips on how to travel and care for your lei to keep it fresh as long as possible.
