Like our mainland neighbors, we celebrate Independence Day by lighting up our night sky and coming together with friends and family for picnics and entertainment. Although Hawaii is the youngest state of the Union, admitted on August 21, 1959, we enjoy many of the same celebratory traditions as our sister states.
If you're planning to spend 4th of July on the island, here are some tips for a fun fourth!
Fill up your plate with food. Did you know that 74 million Americans grill on the 4th and that 150 million hotdogs are consumed? Hawaii's specialty isn't hotdogs, but we know how to grill some amazing food on our island and at our luau. So enjoy a cookout with your friends, family, and fellow travelers. The guest BBQ grills at Hanalei Colony are a popular gathering place year-round, but particularly on the 4th of July!
Fireworks. Spectacular aerial fireworks shows are often scheduled for other parts of the island, such as Lihue or Kekaha, but many of our local residents bring smaller fireworks or sparklers to the beach for some traditional Fourth of July fun. Please check local laws before purchasing fireworks or sparklers. The Kauai Police Department takes firework safety very seriously.
Driving with aloha. We advise our guests to drive with aloha and take your time for your safety and the safety of other drivers, particularly on a holiday when so many people are on the road. The hospital is not where you want to spend the 4th of July! If you decide to leave the resort, be mindful of your fellow drivers, as the north shore has many one-lane bridges and there is an accepted etiquette for crossing those bridges. The Kauai PD will also be on the lookout for drivers under the influence, so perhaps a night at Hanalei Colony Resort, sitting on the beach with a Mai Tai is the best way to enjoy the holiday.
Celebrate the day with a lei. A lei conveys the spirit of aloha and is given and worn to celebrate affection, respect, and a special occasion. Stop by the front desk and sign up for our Friday lei making class. You can then present your handmade lei to a loved one or keep it as a special memento of your 4th of July holiday on Kauai.
Happy 4th of July to our guests!
