The Hanalei Valley lookout reveals a serene panorama: the Hanalei River, National Wildlife Refuge, and Kauai’s famed taro fields—a patchwork quilt of green. Next up the road, a stunning view is unveiled of iconic Hanalei Bay encircled by mountains. A glimpse of what’s to come.You descend to the historic Hanalei Bridge—the first of seven one-lane bridges you will cross on your journey. From there you are transported into another world by a two-lane highway, meandering for the next several miles through an area of extraordinary beauty and rich history. You pass the quaint town of Hanalei, with its hippie/surfer vibe and eclectic mix of old-Hawaii charm and modern-day offerings. The Old Hanalei Schoolhouse, a historic building now home to boutique shops and restaurants. The picturesque green Wai’oli Hui’ia church, dwarfed by a backdrop of massive mountains.

The next four miles are a feast for the senses, bordered by emerald mountains laced with waterfalls and aquamarine seas framed by white sand beaches. Life slows down. Greens become greener; scents become earthier. Shafts of sunlight warm the trees, their colors altered by passing clouds. Then, in a tranquil place called Ha’ena, you will come upon Hanalei Colony.
